A week after watching the first three live action movie adaptations, I was able to finish watching the newer live action adaptations - the 2015 drama series, the 2016 movie (sequel to the first movies) and its three-part prequel. I may also consider watching the American version as well as the anime series. But overall, I still prefer the 2006 movies.

デスノート (Death Note)

No. of Episodes: 11, approx. 45 mins. per episode
Original Network: NTV
WATCH HERE

This actually follows a different story line from the first live action adaptation, with somewhat confusing yet unique plot twist (but I actually liked it!) revealed at the middle to end of this series. In the 2006 movies, Yagami Light already exudes his genius side even before he found the Death Note, while in this drama adaptation, it started with Light being a typical university student having part-time job, and his wit and his sense of "justice" were only started to awaken due to an incident where his father was involved. Looking at the transition of Light's character from being innocent to psychopath, I can say that humans are indeed scary - we'll never know at what extent they can do. Also, in this adaptation, a character named Near is introduced here as L's comrade and assisted in the Kira Case. I also like Ryuk here, he's funnier, as compared to more serious Ryuk in the movies lol.

Death Note: Light up the NEW world

WATCH HERE

This is actually a sequel to the first two movies released in 2006. 10 years after the Kira Case, murders start to occur around the world again, which were believed to be caused by the Death Note. Hence, a task force, lead by Mishima, started to investigate the case, also with the assistance of Ryuzaki, a private investigator who is known as L's successor. In their investigation, they discovered that there are six Death Notes existing, and when they were able to acquire some of these, a computer virus, in a form of a recorded video from Light is spreading, asking to hand over the Death Notes.

Death Note NEW GENERATION

No. of Episodes: 3, approx. 22 mins. per episode
Original Network: Hulu

This is the prequel to Death Note: Light Up the New World movie. The mini series depicts the three main characters in the movie, and how they involved in the Death Note case - Mishima, the lead of the Kira task force, known as Death Note otaku; Ryuzaki, the private detective known as L's successor; and Shien, a cyberterrorist who's a "Kira" follower, the one spreading the Kira computer virus.

🍎🍎🍎

Honestly, the 2016 movie (and its prequel) doesn't give me much impression, although I appreciate the part wherein it shows how Misa's doing after 10 years since she took ownership of the Death Note. But anyway...

One thing that I realized: What many of us can perceive as something good, can actually deceive us and may ended up being an actual bad thing, and vice-versa. That thought is just terrifying, and this really tests our sense of justice and morality. 😏

riemaynine: (Default)
Well... This is actually about the grandfather himself though. Honestly, I haven't seen any Kindaichi Hajime dramas yet. 😅

I've just rewatched two special dramas (TV movies) starring Shige as Kindaichi Kousuke, known as Hajime's grandpa. Set around Showa Era, private detective Kindaichi has been solving murder cases that were considered first as something "supernatural" because of the bizarreness of the events happened as if these were curses.

犬神家の一族 (The Inugami Clan)

After the whole clan of Inugami gathered around to know the content of their head's last will, murder cases within the family started to occur. What is strange here is how the events were related to their three heirlooms - axe, koto and chrysanthemum.

悪魔の手毬唄 (The Devil's Ballad)

The murder cases started to occur when the famous singer Oozora Yukari came back to her hometown. How the dead bodies were seen are similar to what the verses of "The handball song" (Temari uta) are telling. A case happened in that village 20 years ago, and this is somehow related to the series of murders happening in present time (in this drama).

Some screencaps from both movies:

Grandpa Kindaichi!

For "The Inugami Clan", since I've already watched this before, I was able to create a short thread of screencaps.

Kindaichi seems to be an unreliable detective for some because of his unkempt appearance - he seldom takes a bath and frequently scratches his head lol.

But was able to dip into a hot spring during the second movie 😆.

Yabu Kota is in "The Inugami Clan" as a police officer, while Kotaki Nozomu is in "The Devil's Ballad" as the eldest son of the hot spring inn's owner.

Furuya Ikko-san, who appeared in "The Devil's Ballad, had also played the role of Kindaichi Kousuke back in 1970s, hence, there is this scene:

Rest in Peace, Furuya-san🕊

At the end of each movie, Kindaichi starts travelling back, on foot.

I know Yokomizo Seishi-sensei had published several Kindaichi Kousuke novels, aside from the two abovementioned ones, so I just wish for another special drama adaptations of his works someday - I would like to see Kindaichi Shige again!

"Even in the depth of darkness, there must be a little spark of light. If you don't give up, you'll find the light."

I just finished rewatching a heartbreaking yet inspirational drama tonight starring Shige! I actually watched it the first time way back 2019, but this was first aired on television as 24hr TV SP drama in 2016, where NEWS was the main personality for the said NTV network's telethon. Since it's already my habit to write a review of the dramas and movies that I have just watched, even though I already had the thread of random tweets for this drama, I still would like to post an entry here in DW, even if this will be just short and simple.

Shige played the role of Arai Yoshinori, a young middle school teacher who was diagnosed with having retinal detachment, which would be the reason for him to gradually becoming blind. By the time he already see nothing but darkness, at first, he felt that he was hopeless and would not be able to go back to be a teacher again, but by the support he receives from everyone around him especially his wife (played by Sawajiri Erika), he was able to regain the determination to return to teach again.

The drama (or we can say that this as a TV movie - tanpatsu, approx. 1 and a half hours duration) starts with Onosaki (played by Kotaki Nozomu), Yoshinori-sensei's former student narrating. He decided to visit his former teacher, but would be surprised when he found out that his teacher, whom he known for being cheerful, had become a different person.

What I found cute here is the love story between Yoshinori-sensei and Mayumi-sensei - I remembered shipping Shige with Erika here for a short time before huehue.

By the way, Kei-chan is also here! He played the role of a worker in a rehabilitation center where he guided Yoshinori-sensei.

Cute Claude, the guard dog!

At the end of the drama, HiHi Jets members Takahashi Yuto, Inoue Mizuki and Hashimoto Ryo appeared, as Yoshinori-sensei's students in the new school where he would restart teaching.

Where to watch: NEWSnow Express at LJ subbed the drama!

And remember...

--- Mirai e, a NEWS song that serves as the theme song for Nigatsu no Shousha

After rewatching NEWS concerts (and be emotional with STORY), I was able to finish watching (or lemme say binge-watching as it only took me two days to finish lol) another Jdrama, starring Yagira Yuya and Inoue Mao, with Shige also appearing as regular character.

Title: 二月の勝者-絶対合格の教室-(Pay to Ace/
February Winners: Absolutely Passable Classroom)
Genre: slice of life, drama
No. of Episodes: 10 episodes, approx. 54 minutes per episode
Original Network: NTV, aired in Fall 2021

Based from the manga with the same title by Takase Shiho, the story is set in an average cram school Ouka Seminar, headed by Kuroki Kurodo (played by Yagira Yuya), who once worked in an elite cram school as a competent teacher, so he has an assurance that every student in the cram school he currently works at will pass the middle entrance examination. This drama focuses more on the common struggles that the cram school students are facing, and how Kuroki-sensei addressed those issues while encouraging the students to become "winners in February". (February is when entrance exams take place in Japan.)

At first, Sakura Mai (played by Inoue Mao), a new teacher in Ouka Seminar, thought that Kuroki-sensei only cares about money since he mentioned that cram school is a business where they render services to the customers, which are the cram school students, but his clever ways of engaging the students not to quit made her realized that he actually cares for the students.

He truly cares lol

On the other hand, Haitani Jun (played by Kato Shigeaki *SHIGEEEE💚*), who works at Luttwak, the elite cram school where Kuroki-sensei formerly worked as the teacher, was finding the reason why Kuroki-sensei quit at Luttwak, so Haitani-sensei is following him almost every where just to seek an answer from Kuroki-sensei himself.

Oh my goodness Haitani, are you a stalker?! lmao 😆

Ah, because you're a stalker? Just kidding!

I really love how this drama had tackled real-life situations experienced by the cram school students that are really relatable! Some students have a hard time catching up with lessons being taught, some are too competitive that they would not like to lose at anyone, some are just attending since it is their parents' decisions to let them attend the classes.

Here are some of the quotes that caught my attention, which really make sense:

Kuroki-sensei advised his co-teachers to encourage the students by saying, "The fact that you are anxious is proof that you have worked hard."

Kuroki-sensei, while talking to Haitani-sensei: Passing the exam is not the ultimate goal. Those who know the joy of learning and the preciousness of defeating oneself through examinations are the real winners who will open up the future.

Lemme post some screencaps of my ultimate oshi here!

Plus here's cute Johnny's Jr. Hamura Jinsei who played the role of a smart cram school student!

WHERE TO WATCH:

I have just finished watching another classic Taiwanese drama last night! Honestly, I haven't watched any of the episodes when the dubbed version was aired on PH television way back when I was in high school, but the cast members here are familiar since I was able to watch their previous dramas before. By the way, there are episodes uploaded on YouTube, so if you're interested to watch this drama, HERE is the link to be redirected to the playlist containing the episodes.

Consisting of 20 episodes, with approx. 46 minutes per episode (the one being aired on the television is approx. 1 hour per episode, so some sites have indicated that there are only 13 episodes), as a watcher who is used to short, direct to the point Jdramas, I really find the drama somewhat slow paced, although I enjoyed the latter part of the series. Maybe since I'm more into mystery and suspense rather than romance, some episodes are somewhat boring or too cheesy for me. But I was able to continue watching it when it reached the exciting part of the series, when *ehem, this is some kind of spoiler* the characters are "fooling", or let me say, "doing some kind of a prank" with one another lol.

So this series is based from shoujo manga "Romance Godan Katsuyou" by Fujita Kazuko (I'll find time to read it...). The story started with Xiao Mai who dreamed of being an heiress, not knowing that she's an actual one, as her biological grandfather, who is the head of Huangfu family, an aristocratic clan, has been able to find her after being kidnapped and lost for years. Her dream has finally come true, but what is happening in that household is something that she's not expecting to happen. One of the four candidates to be the successor of Xiao Mai's grandfather disliked Xiao Mai at first, as he would be expected to be engaged with Xiao Mai. In reality, that candidate, Nang Feng Jin, doesn't like to be the successor so he tried to ignore Xiao Mai, however, love developed between the two of them.

The main cast members are actually eye candies - they are all very attractive! Look at Angela Zhang and Wu Chun (member of Taiwanese pop group Fahrenheit), they're pretty and handsome, respectively.

But I like Calvin Chen (Wu Chun's co-member in Fahrenheit) here more because of his smile, his cute dimples! He's soooo appealing! It somewhat reminds me of either Tamamori Yuta or Nakajima Kento with that smile and looks OMG lol.

I actually looked into Wu Chun's and Calvin Chen's Instagram accounts, and my goodness, they're still gorgeous even if they're already in their 40s! 😍💕

Anyway, there are still some Taiwanese dramas that I would like to watch next time, but for a meantime, I'll continue watching Japanese dramas that are still in my very long to-be watched list lol.

I've just spent my extra day-off finishing another Jdrama with an unusual story. I admit, at first, I was hesitated to watch this due to several reviews about it being disturbing, in addition to having that prohibited student-teacher relationship kind of trope. But at the end, due to curiosity about how strange this drama is, I gave this a try.

Title: ホームルーム (Homeroom)
Genre: Mystery, Psychological
No. of Episodes: 10 episodes, approx. 24 minutes per episode
Original Network: MBS, aired in 2020

The story is set in a school where a handsome teacher Aida Rintaro (played by Yamada Yuki) works. One of his students, Sakurai Sachiko (played by Akita Shiori) is being bullied frequently by someone unidentified. By being always there to save her from these incidents, Sakurai started to have feelings for Aida-sensei, not knowing that Aida-sensei actually likes her so much to the point that he always keep an eye on her.

Based from the synopsis, maybe some will have an impression that this is a cute love story between the student and teacher (but for me, that relationship alone is somewhat bothering me already - but why did I watch it anyway lol), but as we go along, the story is actually NOT CUTE. It is creepy, so disturbing. Aida-sensei who is always keeping an eye on Sakurai means that he is following her, in creepy ways - making incidents so as to save her and even staying in her house without being noticed - more of like a stalker than an admirer 😅.

The drama is more of mystery, psychological genre rather than romance (that's not even love. That's OBSESSION), and aside from that, I actually laughed at some of the scenes there. In most of the episodes, I keep on seeing... butt. And, this may be a spoiler, but what the hell with that "licking foot" scene?! In my opinion, Aida-sensei should seek professional assistance for that perverted behavior, which is unfortunately affected by the past experiences and the lack of self-worth. But what is more surprising is that, as the story progresses, there are even more unexpected revelations from other characters. I somewhat appreciate incorporating art concepts (since Aida-sensei is an Art teacher) in the episodes though, except that crazy way of letting the heroine sleep with positions same as the subjects of some famous artworks.

I'm amazed with Yuki's acting skills, as well as with his guts of doing that kind of role lol. I don't know if I can recommend watching this since this is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but if you're into dramas with unique plot twist (like me), then it is in viewer's discretion whether to give this a try. But as for me, watching this once is enough, I'll not rewatch this anymore lol.

Anyway, let's appreciate Aida-sensei's handsomeness, but remember that looks can really be deceiving. 😆

Sakurai, if I were you, after knowing what kind of secret my admired teacher has, I would definitely give up my feelings for him. Stop with those illusions please lol. Listen to your bestfriend.

This scene really made me laugh so hard. 😂
(I decided not to screencap butts lmao 🤣)

Happiness. 🙃

WHERE TO WATCH: Fansubber rjgman56subs had subbed this drama! Watch at your own risk!
riemaynine: (Default)
The title of this entry is a quote from Maria V. Snyder, an American author. Let me relate that quote to a series + two sequel movies that I have just finished watching.

During these previous days, news about an upcoming drama, Tomodachi Game R4, starring Bi Shounen members and two HiHi Jets members Inoue Mizuki and Igari Soya, has been lifted. Teasers have also been uploaded in the official Johnny and Associates Youtube channel. The series will premiere on July 23, 2022 via TV Asahi and will be broadcasted every Saturday at 11 pm JST.

I was not actually aware, until said drama was announced, that there was already the live action adaptation of the manga aired in 2017, so before watching the upcoming drama (but not in real time, as usual), and also due to curiosity about the story, I decided to watch these.

Title: トモダチゲーム (Tomodachi Game/Friends Game)
Genre: Psychological, Suspense, Drama

This is a 4-episode series, each episode is about 23 minutes. Katagiri Yuichi (Yoshizawa Ryo) is a poor high school student yet he values his friends more than money. One time, due to stolen school funds, he, together with his friends, were forced by a mascot named Manabu to participate in games to pay for the debt, which will eventually test their friendship and their trust with one another. The series features the first game, Kokkuri-san, which is more like Japanese ouija board game.

WHERE TO WATCH: Eien no Aidoru subbed the four episodes of this drama!

Continuation of the "trust" games, Yuichi and his friends (also known as Team C) played sugoroku (a Japanese board game with the same rule as Monopoly) as the second game, but with a twist, since this would involve revealing secrets.

The last game, wherein Team C needs to compete with another team, Team K, in a game of hide and seek. This movie would also reveal everything about who is the real traitor and who is the one behind these games of betrayal.

All I can say is that, the series + movies are just intense, and the plot twist was amazing! Even I was suspecting who among them is the traitor lol.

Kudos to Oryo, his acting, his facial expressions (the gaze and the smirk, oh my...!) had impressed me!

Manabu is cute, but creepy lol.

And this has also caught my attention lol. As mentioned in the earlier part of this entry, Bi Shounen members will appear in the upcoming adaptation of Tomodachi Game. Look at Mikasa Tenji (Yamada Yuki) and Shibe Makoto (Okura Shimon), they resemble Ryuga and Naakun, right?! 😁 What is more mindblowing to me is the fact that Ryuga will be playing the role same as Yuki in the upcoming series! However, Miju will be playing as Shibe and Naakun will be a member of Team K.

But I'm also thinking that Ryuga has more androgynous features than Yuki. And of course, Naakun is way shorter than Shimon huehue.

By the way, just a little spoiler, there's a kiss scene between Oryo and Yuki lol. Since Ukki will be the upcoming series' Yuichi, so if ever this series will follow that scene, so Ukki and Ryuga will... EH?! 🤭

Anyway, as I've also mentioned in my previous review on Zero: Ikkakusenkin Game, the lessons that we can learn from this type of drama is that, trust is actually hard to gain, but easy to break. And real friendship is actually rare, since it also involves accepting your friends' real selves.

Currently, I'm in concert marathon mood, but prior starting this "annual concert viewing", I was able to watch one unique romantic comedy which I found cute and funny!

Originally aired in Fuji TV back in 2015, this 10-episode series featured Ishihara Satomi, who played the role of Sakuraba Junko, an English language instructor who encountered Hoshikawa Takane (played by Yamashita Tomohisa), a monk whom she accidentally thrown ashes to when she attended a funeral service in a temple. They crossed their paths again when Junko's family made her attend to a matchmaking session, meeting Takane. From that moment, Takane put his efforts of visiting Junko everyday, trying to pursue his feelings for her.

Japanese title: 5→9~私に恋したイケメンすぎるお坊さん~
English title: From 5 to 9
Original network: Fuji TV
Number of episodes: 10 episodes, approx. 54 minutes per episode

I am just posting an entry of some good NEWS last week until this week!

NEWS' HEALTH UPDATES!

Massu mentioned in his 12/07 entry in his Jweb, Masuda Takahisa no ◯◯, that he had tested several times and fortunately, the results were negative. He also mentioned that Koyama and Shige are getting better, and he advised everyone to be strict with oneself and be kind to others.

On 12/11, Shige updated his Jweb, Shigeaki no Cloud about his condition, wherein he was advised by the health center that he can return to normal life since he didn't already have the symptoms. When he was sick (he had high fever of 39 degrees), he didn't have any sense of smell. He thought that his immunity has weakened due to restriction in his diet for the online concert (I love the fluffy you, Shige-chan! No need to diet! 😘) He advised everyone to be aware of the minor changes in physical condition.

Koyama updated his Jweb KEIICHIRO on 12/12, wherein he said that he took a PCR test a day before and result came out negative though he still had the symptoms. He felt a little happy while taking a walk under the sunlight in the morning. He is thankful to the medical staff who regularly check his physical condition.

J&A announced through their website that Koyama and Shige had recovered from CoViD19 and would resume their activities.

It was mentioned in Kchan NEWS aired on 12/15 (actually recorded on a day before) that he received lots of kind messages from his Johnny's comrades and received calls from Taichi-senpai (senpai is really kind to NEWS!). He even watched  the performance in FNS and felt the love from other Johnny's. He was frequently contacting Shige to report their physical conditions. Also, it was mentioned here that Massu actually sent Koyama and Shige chicken hot pot and mixed rice good for 3 days. (Massu is so kind! Awww member ai. 😌💕)

Shige updated NEWS RING last 12/16, and he's very thankful that he received many messages from friends and acquaintances upon hearing his return to work, and received lots of emails from fans. His parents went to a shrine to pray for his healing as well. Upon recovery, he visited a shrine that is one of the largest in Tokyo.

Shige: Let's make everyone happy! And I'll be happy too!

OKAERINASAI, KOYASHIGE!😭💜💚

NICE DASH!

I've just finished a Jdrama for two days only, since it consists of ten episodes, and each episode is only about 25 minutes long!
I finally finished watching "Koi no Yamai to Yarougumi" (aka Class Crush, aired on GEM TV before) starring eight Johnny's Jr. (Sato Ryuga and Iwasaki Taisho of Bi Shounen, Takahashi Yuto, Sakuma Ryuto and Igari Soya of HiHi Jets, Oriyama Nao of Shounen Ninja, Nakamura Reia of 7 Men Samurai and Masakado Yoshinori of Ae! group) played as students of an "all-boys" class with Johnny's WEST's Hamada Takahiro who took the role as their adviser. The whole drama focuses on how they can overcome their fear of talking to girls.

The drama is just too hilarious! These young boys are really weird (but I love them anyway. 🤭)

I am hoping that he can win it, but being nominated is already a huge achievement, a great milestone for him in his writing career!

I am so proud of you, Sensei! You deserve this! 💚

MY SON HAS REALLY GROWN UP! 💕

Just this morning, Bunshun (that bullsh*t media lol) released an article regarding Ryuga dating Tsurushima Noa. Honestly, I felt happy rather than disappointed because this proves that Ryuga has already grown up (and being rumored proves that a celebrity is popular lol just kidding)! There is just a con here though, that people may perceive this as wrong since Ryuga is just an 18 year-old high school and an idol. But in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with idols dating, falling in love, because they’re humans with feelings after all. Let them enjoy their youth! I just hate how Bunshun reporters tried to invade the idols' privacy, really. (Being a NEWS fan, Bunshun is an enemy, you know what I mean lol 😤) And knowing Bunshun, they tend to exaggerated or understate their reports! Therefore, we still have to take this report with a grain of salt.

That's all for now. 😆
