This is a Maotsujun one shot fan fiction that is just purely a product of my 'wild'imagination. I wrote this since I'm a huge shipper of Jun and Mao. 🤭
Synopsis: Many years after their high school graduation, they once again meet - once an average guy and a grade-conscious girl. They were nothing but classmates, but would there be a possibility that something develops when they crossed each other's paths again?
Characters: Matsumoto Jun as Jun; Inoue Mao as Mayu/Mao, plus other artistes in cameo roles.

Jun was about to finish his shift from work, when his secretary handed him a paper, about a size of a postcard. He realized that this is an invitation for their high school reunion. Good thing that the reunion would be held on his day off, so he immediately called the party organizer, who was once their class representative/president, that he would be attending.
On the other hand, Mayu was packing up her things as her photoshoot session was already finished. Her personal assistant handed her something - a high school reunion invitation. Her PA checked if Mayu has a scheduled photoshoot session or interview, and as expected, there is. But since the party would be held overnight, Mayu decided to just attend on the later hour of the party due to her hectic schedule. The PA was the one who contacted the organizer instead, confirming that Mayu would be attending in a later hour, since Mayu was already tired.
Jun now works as the head of the Marketing Department. Mao, having a stage name Mayu, now works as fashion magazine model. Actually,
their careers are different from their personalities during high school. Jun was once a happy-go-lucky guy who's contented with whatever grades he would get. He was an average guy, though he could pass his exams. Mao was the one who's a timid achiever, getting high grades on her exam. A grade-conscious student who loves studying, but not confident in showing what she has.
But the fate changes, and they seemed that their career paths had switched, the reason why their classmates were surprised knowing it by the time they had the reunion.

"Irrashaimase, Jun-san!" Shun, the party organizer who was their former class president, greeted when Jun arrived at the venue of their reunion. "I'm happy that you've come."
"It's a good thing that I'm on my day-off. And, I just like to see you as well. I'm glad we are now here at this moment when we are all working now."
"Especially you, Jun-san. We are not expecting you to be the head of the Marketing Department, knowing that you just hate studying. You're always on the boundary between passed and failed, haha." Toma, a former classmate who's a friend as well, interrupted.
Their other classmates arrived, and many of them had their spouses with them. Some of their female classmates who had a crush on him already had their boyfriends, some were already married.
"Hi Jun-kun! You're still handsome! Kyaaah!!!", cheered by their classmates, who were once the cheerleaders of the baseball club where Jun was a member, the same persons who once admired Jun during high school.
"Oh, there's Mirei! Konbanwa, Mirei!" Jun greeted the former leader of the cheerleading team.
Some cheered for them, and teased Jun and Mirei.
"Ah, you once courted Mirei right? I told you, you really look good together until now! Yihee!" Shun said.
"Ehem-ehem..." Someone pretended to cough, approached Mirei and put his arm on her shoulders.
"Oh, this is Tadayoshi, my husband. Shun, you know that was a long time ago, and I'm already happy with him." then Mirei kissed her husband. "How about you, Jun-kun, do you have something or someone who makes you happy aside from your boosting career?"
"Un. I have a girlfriend but... Ah, never mind!"
"Why dude? Is there any problem?" Toma asked.
"Ah, it's nothing, haha... I didn't bring her here, she's working on a night shift."
While having happy conversation, they were surprised that someone came...

"Mao-san, you have a reunion to attend right?" Megumi, her personal assistant and her former schoolmate, asked.
"I'm already tired, Megumi. I don't want to go there anymore, I just want to rest from work."
"But Mao-san, it's fun meeting your former classmates again. I just noticed that everytime you have reunions, you are not attending. You still haven't changed, I knew you were shy during the time you're helping me with my assignments even though we're in different sections, but until now, you're still shy? Look at you now! You're Mayu, the fashion goddess. You already gained confidence, I hope you bring that in your reunion."
"Yeah, I admit, I'm still shy. I'm worried that maybe they still see me as unfriendly and serious. You know me, I was an outcast."
"But, I'm pretty sure they'll not see you as an outcast now since you're famous now. Hmmm... However, I can see that you're still the old Mao-san. Why don't you try to let them see the new you? Hello, you became a model since you want to gain confidence. You use that confidence to meet them."
"I am not confident."
"Oh really, then what do you call with all those posing in the magazines, huh? Are you going to attend or what?"
"I'll still have something to do."
"I'll be doing that instead."
"But it's late, it would be embarrassing if I still attend the party. I still need to prepare."
"You don't need to, you're already gorgeous."
"But..."
Mao's phone rang, but Megumi answered it instead. Megumi then gave the phone to Mao.
"Here, Shun-san is calling you, asking where are you."
Mao talked with Shun, and after hanging up, Mao decided to attend. Her driver, together with Megumi, brought her at the venue.
"Enjoy the night, girl! Send me a message if you need to go home. Ja ne!"
And Mao aka Mayu walked into the venue, and as expected, she's already late and in the middle of the party. All of the attendees stopped when they saw Mayu entering the venue.

Most of them murmured when Mao aka Mayu arrived.
"She's in the fashion magazines!"
"The Fashion Goddess"
"I didn't expect that our former classmate would be a famous icon in a magazine now!"
And there are other reactions from the crowd.
Mao went near a place where Shun, Toma at Jun seated. And waved at them slightly.
"Woaah! Mao-chan, or lemme say Mayu-sama, the Fashion Goddess! Konbanwa, youkoso!" Shun greeted her.
Mao smiled softly. "Konbanwa, minna-san!"
"How are you? You're gorgeous!" Toma said.
"I'm fine, hehe." Mao answered simply.
"Until now, you're still replying a one-liner answer? Haha... Just kidding." Toma jokingly said.
Mao nodded and giggled. Then, she turned her head to Jun.
"Ah, eh... Konbanwa, Jun-san. Ohisashiburi desu, ne?! Hehe..." Mao greeted Jun while waving in a demure manner.
Jun just smiled at her.

While having light meal with some hard drinks,
some were having a conversation about their love life, but Mao was just eating.
"How about you Mao-chan, how's your love life?" Mirei asked while her husband Tadayoshi was already asleep beside her.
Mao just shook her head. She's quiet as usual.
So Jun just said, "You're still quiet until now, Mao-chan"
"Yay! Jun huh?! But I think you two have the "chemistry"! Do you have a girlfriend now, Jun-kun?" the too random Shun asked.
"I have."
"Aww." Toma just uttered.
"Career is my priority. Love will just follow." Mao said.
Later, Toma, Shun and their other former classmates had card games. Jun was having conversation with Masaki, also their classmate who happened to be the bartender in the venue.
Mao was, as usual, still a loner, although there were instances that their female classmates would approach her.
While Jun was having a cocktail drink, he would just stare at Mao, who was alone eating finger food looking into emptiness.

After the party, instead of asking to fetch her, Mao just walked going back to her condominium. When she opened the door of her unit, she saw Megumi's face when the latter was about to go to the restroom near the door. By the way, Megumi was also staying together with Mao in the condominium.
"Bikkurishimashita!" the two both said since they were both surprised.
"What time is it now, look, it's already three in the morning, why did you not call or mail me, I should have fetched you! It's dangerous! Are you crazy?!" Megumi was worried.
"Girl, Tokyo is a safe city." Mao answered confidently.
"Even if Tokyo is safe, you're a woman, a famous icon. If something happened to you, your parents, your manager and the agency would fired me."
"But what's important is that I'm here, safe! Okay, I'm sleepy now. I'm going to remove my make-up before going to bed."
"Tell me something about your reunion!"
"Ah, yeah, I'm still quiet. I didn't socialize much. As usual. Jun also noticed that."
"Eh?! Jun is the one you're saying as your secret long time crush right?! It's really secret to the point that I am the only one who knows about it and never mentioned to anyone. Unlike Kazunari whom you also admit your real feelings to him when you had a crush on him."
"Yeah..."
"That after you admit to Kazunari that you like him, there was already an awkwardness between the two of you, even though you became close since you usually became seatmates before."
"Just don't mention about it. I should never give any meaning about our closeness before.
I'm not sure, but since then, my heart seems to be unwelcoming anymore. I don't want to assume anymore."
"Now I know why until now, you're still single. Don't be like that, Mao-chan. Let others notice you. That's why I was so happy when you decided to accept this career of being a fashion magazine model. And... speaking of model, your manager contacted me, he's going to offer you a project! And this is going to be your first time in your modeling career!"
"What is it?"
"To be on the cover of Anan magazine, together with Junpei! That famous actor-model! Wait, Junpei... Jun? Yay, he almost has the same name as your Crushie! You lucky girl!"
"What?! Anan mag? That fashion mag has mature themes!"
"Hello girl?! You're already in your mid-twenties!
You should not just settle yourself in modeling only for cute fashion and cosplaying!"
"Yeah, I agree though... I also want to experience modeling together with a kakkoi actor-model."
"Nice! Manager-sama told me to just meet him in a bar nearby a night after tomorrow. Junpei will be there as well."

One night inside the car, Jun and his girlfriend Satomi seemed to have an argument:
"You know Jun-kun, I am not sure but I feel that you're not sweet to me lately. What's happening? Do you still love me?"
"It's nothing... I'm just busy lately. I'm sorry if I didn't give you any attention."
"You're always like that. You don't have time for me. You love your work more than me. Also... I don't know why I could see that you have those magazines with Mayu-san on the cover everytime I visit your condominium. Are you an effeminate or just fantasizing Mayu-san?"
"Why are you being jealous at Mayu-san? She's a fashion icon. Lots of people like her!"
"Well it's a different case for me, I hate her. Especially when I knew that she was your classmate in high school."
"That's too shallow reason, Satomi. Am I not allowed to befriend a woman?"
"I can feel that she's the reason why you're half-hearted to me. I don't want to share your heart to anyone, Jun. Would you just like to break ties with me then?"
Jun didn't speak anything.
"See?! You even didn't react when I said that. Meaning, you really would like to break ties with me. Because you don't love me."
"I resist that kind of attitude for so long, Satomi. Yes, honestly, I don't really love you. I just agreed to have a relationship with you since our parents are friends. Our parents just like us to get close with one another. You're the only one who likes me after all. You're too possessive and selfish."
Satomi slapped Jun that hard when the latter admitted his feelings. Satomi opened the car's door and walked away, crying. Jun followed her and held her arms.
"Wait. I'm sorry with what I said."
"I admit that those are true. Okay fine Jun, from now on, we are going to be in our separate lives. I just don't like the fact that my love is thinking about another person even if he's beside me. That's also what you like, right, to cut ties?
Bye Jun, thank you for the memories. Sayonara... "
Satomi just let go off Jun holding her, and walked away. Jun didn't follow her anymore, as he felt that his decision is right. He already felt his freedom.

One night, as Megumi mentioned, Mao went to a bar to meet with her manager, Junpei, and Anan magazine’s Editor-in-Chief. This was regarding a project wherein they will be posing together for a Valentine special issue of the magazine. Because it’s a Valentine's Day issue, Mao aka Mayu and Junpei would act as lovers in the photoshoot. It was expected that the photoshoot would be ‘daring’ since Anan magazine is known for its mature themes.
"This will be another big break for you Mayu-san. So you’ll not only know how to be just cute." Mayu’s manager said. "And don't worry about Junpei, he's really a nice guy. He’ll take care of you."
After their agreement, they were about to go out when Mao heard someone calling her. When she looked towards the direction where she heard it, she saw Jun.
"Ah, you may go home first." She told her acquaintances.
Mao sat across Jun, but was surprised when she was pulled by him, and ended up sitting on his lap.
"Mao-chan, I knew you like me!"
Mao just hit Jun lightly.
"Shhh! You’ve pulled me, I didn’t intend to sit there! And, I don't have eyes on you, huh?! You're always teasing me when we were in high school.
Why did you call me by the way?"
"Nah, it's nothing. I just saw you. It seems you had something important that you talked about?"
"Ah... about my next photoshoot. This time in Anan magazine."
"Anan!? That means, you'll change your image now?"
"Yeah I think so, hehe."
"I'll be buying that issue. Looking forward to it!"
"Thanks, hehe..."
"It's just surprising that you come out of your comfort zone now. I knew you as a demure one in high school. Although you're still the quiet one like before, haha."
"Hmmm... I think I need an exposure too. Anou... are you alone?"
"Nope... I'm with someone whom you cannot see."
"Haha... I mean, why are you alone?"
"Never mind, hehe, I'm kidding. I just need to relieve my stress."
"Because of your work right?"
"Also because of love life. I just broke up with my kanojo. But that's okay. I'm free at last."
"Oh? Sad to hear that. But why it feels like it's nothing?"
"I don't really love her. We had a relationship just to say that our status is in a relationship, also because we were pressured by our parents. We just had an agreement since our parents are close friends. And the fact that I, being polite, didn't leave Satomi even though she's immature. Satomi was the one who really liked me, but she was also the one who asked to break up."
"Ahhh..."
"Yeah... because until now, I still admire a woman that I think I can't reach. She was intimidating because she's an achiever, so I didn't have the guts to tell her my true feelings. She seems stubborn. I was doing what I can just to notice me, but it seems she doesn't get what I want to convey... Her priority was studies over love. Then now, I think it's impossible to do the same. I think she's already above me, while I'm just an ordinary person. Actually..."
Jun stopped when someone called Mao.
"Hello Megumi? Ah okay sure..."
"Anou, Jun-san, I'm going home now. Megumi is already looking for me. It's already late in the evening. Ah, don't get drunk too much, okay? Well... thanks that we meet again. Ja ne!" And Mao stood up and already went outside the bar.
When Mao left, Jun just uttered to himself...
"Actually, I want to admit that until now, I am secretly in love with you, Mao. You just don't feel it. But... I already don't have the confidence to tell you... You're a known personality already, while me... I may be the head of the Marketing department, but I am an ordinary employee only.
I'll never win against those popular celebrities around you. One of those is this Junpei whom I saw staring at you since a while ago. Well...I think I need to accept the reality." And he drank those beverages left on his table.

"Mao-chan, I knew you like me!"
Mao kept thinking as if she's hearing those words that Jun said when they met at the bar, the reason why her heart beats faster.
"If you only really knew, yeah, Jun... I still like you..." Mao just said that to herself.
She felt the same feelings for Jun all over again, that feeling when they were classmates in high school. She temporarily forgot those feelings after graduation, but many years after, when they crossed their paths once again, she felt some butterflies in her stomach. Undeniably, Mao is still in love with Jun, however, she believes that it's just one-sided love. She thinks that Jun will never feel the same for her.
It was started when they were group mates in their Literature class. They were about to have a group project wherein they will have their own version of Shakesperean play Romeo and Juliet. Their groupmates decided to give the roles of Romeo to Jun and Juliet to Mao.
On the time of their play, one of the scenes became the highlight of their performance for those who watched: Romeo and Juliet's kissing scene. During rehearsal, they just did an angle as if they were about to kiss, but during their actual performance, Jun put his lips on Mao's.
Days after the play, Jun approached Mao. Mao would go away then, but Jun was able to hold her wrist.
"Mao-chan... Anou... Gomen for what happened during the play. But it was paid off. We got high grade for the play."
Mao just nodded. But her face became red.
Jun saw that redness, and thought that Mao was sick, so he held her cheeks and forehead to know if she's feeling well.
"Daijoubu desu ka? Are you not feeling well? Your cheeks are becoming red."
"Ah, no, it's nothing."
"Are you sure? I'm sorry for what happened. It's just an act."
"Un. Daijoubu desu. But that's my first kiss. I was just shocked."
"Sou da ne..."
"But forget about it, Jun-kun. As what you have said, it's just an act. Look, many people appreciate the play. Hehe... Ah, okay, I need to go now."
It seemed that the kiss was nothing, but after a year, they have started their closeness, literally close, when they became seatmates.
Because Jun was really a happy-go-lucky guy, he was not interested to listen during class, so he got bored easily. Instead of sleeping, he just teased Mao, who was very attentive in class.
"Hey, you're too quiet!"
At first, she didn't mind him, but Mao thought that Jun would stop teasing her if she would just respond to him. In a short while, Mao already talked with Jun, and with the frequent conversations, they already knew each other - Jun is somewhat mischievous and Mao is somewhat sensitive. So every break time, Jun was always making fun of Mao. Mao just hit him lightly, but when Mao cannot take it anymore, she would just teared up. But the playful Jun liked it.
One moment was when Megumi, Mao's bestfriend from class 2-C, asked her help in doing the assignment, they linked arms, then Jun suddenly put his arm on Mao's shoulder saying, "We are in a relationship.", the reason for Mao to run away. She couldn't endure Jun's teasing anymore. Jun then followed Mao, and he saw the latter already crying in a warehouse where the old tables at chairs were kept.
Jun tapped Mao's head, saying, "Sorry Mao-chan. I'm just kidding. Let's be friends?!"
Mao nodded and just wiped her tears. When Jun noticed that she's fine, he uttered "Wow, I think we should stay here first and let's make a miracle.", Mao just smacked him.
"Gomen gomen... Let's go back to our classroom."
Reminiscing that moment, a wide smile can be seen from Mao's face while lying down.
"But I feel hurt when I remember those moments. I gave a deep meaning to every word you said. I just hope those were true."
And she rested her back and closed her eyes.

But Mao's feelings to Jun faded when somebody entered the drama of their lives.
After summer break, they met a transferee named Kazunari - once Mao's elementary classmate, who eventually became the class heartthrob because of being musically inclined. One of them is Mao, who got infatuated. Because Mao already knew Kazunari since then, they often talked with one another, to the point that their classmates thought that they were in a relationship due to their closeness. That gave Mao an idea to admit her feelings to Kazunari by writing a love letter to him. She believed that her and Kazunari's feelings are mutual.
While Mao was writing a love letter, Jun sneakily peeked and then reacted, "Ahhh... You like Kazunari-kun." Mao just quickly hid the letter.
"Just continue writing... I can even help you give that to him." Jun sarcastically said, but Mao didn't noticed that so she nodded. After she finished writing, Mao handed Jun her letter to give it to Kazunari.
"Haaay... you're too numb, Mao-chan. What I said is just an exact opposite of what I meant. But as a good friend, I'll just give this to your not-so-tall crush." Jun whispered to himself while looking for Kazunari to give the letter. He gave the letter to Kazunari, and he even saw him read it. After that, he saw Kazunari was writing something on the same paper where Mao wrote the letter, and his eyes could follow where Kazunari went afterwards, knowing that he dropped that paper in Mao’s locker. Later, Jun saw the emptiness on Mao’s face. He thought that maybe she already read Kazunari’s reply letter, and he could see through Mao’s face that his reply was negative. Jun was able to look on the paper, and he could just glanced those words, "...Let's be friends, anyway."
He didn’t actually see Kazunari’s whole response, but Jun knew that Mao was not expecting that kind of answer from him.
Mao just thought, “Maybe, I was really wrong that a girl can admit her feelings to a boy.” She was surprised when Jun just tapped her shoulder as a comfort. She didn’t say anything to Jun, but she seemed that Jun knew that there was something wrong happened.
Mao’s feelings toward Kazunari gradually faded, until she knew that Kazunari and his family would migrate to New York. From then, Mao completely forgot that she was infatuated to Kazunari.
Last year in high school when Jun realized that he’s in love with Mao. He thought at first that he just want to tease Mao, but he gradually fell in love with her. He would like to admit his feelings to her but his fear that Mao might reject him pulled him away since he knew Mao wasn’t thinking about going in a relationship due to her priorities as an achiever student. Thus, Jun just focused on being a baseball player, just to forget his feelings for Mao.
And Jun really forgot his feelings for Mao, during one of his baseball practice. The cheering squad was practicing as well during that time. While forming a pyramid, Mirei, the cheering squad captain tried to roll on the air when she wasn’t able to land flat on the ground, resulting to her slightly dislocated ankle. Jun saw her and immediately brought her to a nearby school clinic.
And that’s how they started getting to know each other.
So Jun really courted Mirei, but the latter didn’t allow him to pursue since she already had a boyfriend then, who happened to be Tadayoshi, her current husband. Jun just gave up, and Mao was also the reason.
But he wasn’t able to admit that feelings to Mao then, and he believed that it was too late since Mao became cold towards him already.
"If ever I had the guts back then to admit what I am feeling, and I did it earlier, maybe she would not be that cold."
Jun was still at the bar, but his head was already rested on the table. "But I am happy that Mao still notices me despite being famous."
Jun was speaking alone due to being drunk.
Jun reminisced his memory of teasing Mao,
"I just wished that you felt that there was truth in those words I used to tease you. You're too serious when it comes to studies, but you’re too dense when it comes to this kind of feeling. I just wished you gave even a little but deeper meaning on what I’ve done before."

"Ah, my head hurts!" Jun gently touched his temples, feeling like he's still in hung-over from drinking last night.
But he was able to get up, and bought his food even if he’s still not feeling well. While walking, he saw Megumi, their former classmate, and now, Mao’s bestfriend and personal assistant.
"Oha-YO!" Jun greeted Megumi. "How are you? Where are you going?"
Megumi answered formally as the PA, "I am going in a nearby hotel. Mayu-san has a photoshoot for Anan. I’ll go ahead, Jun-san, I need to be in hurry. Dewa mata ne!"
“Oh I remembered! Mao-chan told me she would have a photoshoot with that Junpei.”
And Jun decided to be ninja-like, sneakily going to the photoshoot. And he arrived in a hotel where the photoshoot would be taking place.
And he was shocked to see Mao aka Mayu wearing only a two-piece clothing covered with fake leaves. Beside her is Junpei, displaying his sexy body, just wearing a lower clothing also covered with leaves. The theme of the photoshot would be Adam and Eve.
Then the photoshoot session started. They stood back to back as their first pose. Then they held together the apple on the fake tree as the next scene. They stared... they hugged... then Junpei kissed Mayu's forehead.
Jun became bitter. "Hmmp! This Valentine photoshoot is too boring! Our photoshoot when we did Romeo and Juliet during high school was even better!
But Jun was shocked with what happened next:
Junpei was sitting on Mayu's thigh, kissing her shoulder, then lightly on her nape. They started to kiss as a smack, and was about to... French kiss!
Jun couldn't take that anymore, so he got out from where he was hiding, and was about to attack Junpei but Megumi held him.
"Hey, Jun-san! Why are you here?! Anyone is not allowed to be here in the photoshoot!"
Megumi held Jun even more, but he was too strong even if other staff members were already helping her holding him. They were already expecting that a chaos would happen, but they were surprised with what happened.
They thought that Jun would punch Junpei, but instead, Jun approached Mao and put on his jacket to her. In the end, Jun still punched Junpei once, and said, "You're lucky, dude... I'm jealous. I just wish I'm also an actor or a model to have a chance to get close to Mayu-chan just like what you had earlier" And he left the venue.
The shooting site got quiet for a while. Mayu aka Mao was shocked with what she heard from Jun.
She quickly changed her clothes and followed Jun, hoping that she can still see him.

"Jun-kun!" Mao chased Jun who quickly walked away. "Jun-kun! Wait for me... Hey!
Jun stopped from walking. He turned to Mao, saying, "You still have the photoshoot with that Junpei, right? You're wasting your time, go back!"
"No... I am not going back anymore. What do you mean you want to have a chance to get close to me?"
"Because you're my idol. You're famous, many like to get close to you. I am one of them. That's it. There's no other meaning to that."
Jun would start going away when he saw Mao's tears falling from her eyes.
"I thought so, Jun-kun, I should not think about what that means. I'm so stupid. Even during high school. I gave a deeper meaning with all those teasing and sweet things you did. I never learned, I even thought something deep with the closeness between me and Kazunari. But you know, I just wanted to see your reaction, though those things that happened seemed nothing to you. I also got jealous with your closeness with Mirei. But thank you, as I realized that I need to get out of my comfort zone and built my confidence.
The reason was another foolish thing though - I still hope I can get closer to you so I changed myself.
The shockness can be seen from Jun’s face. He went silent for a moment and just chuckled.
"We’re both stupid. I also thought that you’re numb who couldn’t grasp the real meaning of my teasing and sweetness. You’re having such a poker face!"
"You’re the one who has the poker face!"
"Haha... I also changed myself by working hard so by the time we would be meeting again, you would be proud of me and I would be confident enough to admit how I feel for you. So that means, we’re both shy to admit our feelings for one another. HAHAHA... Our story is such a joke."
Mao just giggled with what Jun said.
"But... whatever happens to you, you, Mao-chan, is my greatest love since then. No exact reason about why. I both love the timid Mao-chan and the confident Mao-chan."
Mao became red upon hearing those words from Jun.
"Oh.. you’re getting red again! Are you sick?"
Jun touched Mao’s cheeks and forehead, just like what he did during their first encounter.
Mao just held Jun’s hands on her cheeks. No words were said, only actions happened - she hugged him.
Mao didn’t say anything, but Jun felt her positive answer about his confession.
Even though they were separated again due to their careers, they assured one thing - they may be physically away, but their hearts are always connected.
