Two weeks ago, I was able to watch four movies.

While her parents were eating in an unmanned restaurant, Chihiro explored the place until she reached a bathhouse, but a boy named Haku warned her to go back. When night fell, she had encountered different creatures and spirits until she found that her parents were turned into pigs. As advised by Haku, she asked for a job in the bathhouse in order for her and her parents to escape, and to return to the human world.

A week after watching the first three live action movie adaptations, I was able to finish watching the newer live action adaptations - the 2015 drama series, the 2016 movie (sequel to the first movies) and its three-part prequel. I may also consider watching the American version as well as the anime series. But overall, I still prefer the 2006 movies.

デスノート (Death Note)

No. of Episodes: 11, approx. 45 mins. per episode
Original Network: NTV
WATCH HERE

This actually follows a different story line from the first live action adaptation, with somewhat confusing yet unique plot twist (but I actually liked it!) revealed at the middle to end of this series. In the 2006 movies, Yagami Light already exudes his genius side even before he found the Death Note, while in this drama adaptation, it started with Light being a typical university student having part-time job, and his wit and his sense of "justice" were only started to awaken due to an incident where his father was involved. Looking at the transition of Light's character from being innocent to psychopath, I can say that humans are indeed scary - we'll never know at what extent they can do. Also, in this adaptation, a character named Near is introduced here as L's comrade and assisted in the Kira Case. I also like Ryuk here, he's funnier, as compared to more serious Ryuk in the movies lol.

Death Note: Light up the NEW world

WATCH HERE

This is actually a sequel to the first two movies released in 2006. 10 years after the Kira Case, murders start to occur around the world again, which were believed to be caused by the Death Note. Hence, a task force, lead by Mishima, started to investigate the case, also with the assistance of Ryuzaki, a private investigator who is known as L's successor. In their investigation, they discovered that there are six Death Notes existing, and when they were able to acquire some of these, a computer virus, in a form of a recorded video from Light is spreading, asking to hand over the Death Notes.

Death Note NEW GENERATION

No. of Episodes: 3, approx. 22 mins. per episode
Original Network: Hulu

This is the prequel to Death Note: Light Up the New World movie. The mini series depicts the three main characters in the movie, and how they involved in the Death Note case - Mishima, the lead of the Kira task force, known as Death Note otaku; Ryuzaki, the private detective known as L's successor; and Shien, a cyberterrorist who's a "Kira" follower, the one spreading the Kira computer virus.

🍎🍎🍎

Honestly, the 2016 movie (and its prequel) doesn't give me much impression, although I appreciate the part wherein it shows how Misa's doing after 10 years since she took ownership of the Death Note. But anyway...

One thing that I realized: What many of us can perceive as something good, can actually deceive us and may ended up being an actual bad thing, and vice-versa. That thought is just terrifying, and this really tests our sense of justice and morality. 😏

Criminals are found dead due to mysterious reasons. Crime rates declining due to these deaths - looks like an ideal world is starting to emerge. Or is it really ideal?

Here I am again, posting another simple review on what I've just watched recently. Actually, I watched these movies once, way back when I was still in high school, so I admit, I already forgot the story lol. But after rewatching these, I appreciate them even more, especially that the genre is something that I prefer. I am telling this for several times already, but I really prefer mystery/thriller over romance 😆.

デスノート (Death Note)

A bright university student, Yagami Light, found a black mysterious notebook, only later realized that this actually belongs to a Shinigami (Death God). Any name written in that notebook will die. Using his wit, Light (or Kira, for those who believed that he's a "savior" since he's targeting criminals) was able to manipulate deaths by creating incidents in said notebook. With the multiple death cases happening, the police has requested an eccentric yet genius detective named L for assistance regarding this case since L was able to solve past cases which deemed to be unresolvable.

デスノート the Last name (Death Note: The Last Name)

Light joined the investigation team to solve the cases of multiple deaths among the criminals, which were believed that Kira is the mastermind behind. However, the real reason for joining the team is in order for him to discover L's real name so he would be able to write it in the Death Note. As the investigation continues, another series of deaths occur, which are said to be done by "the second Kira". Light was able to know the identity of this Kira, and decided to join forces to kill L.

L: Change the World

This is actually L's side story, happened after he solved Kira's case. While the first two movies depict supernatural events, I can say that this movie is more of a science fiction and may happen in real life.

After solving Kira's case, L took another task of solving another case, which has something to do with a little boy who happened to be the sole survivor of a tragedy, where the residents in a village in Thailand were slowly dying. L learned that a man-made virus is the reason behind said tragedy, and the key to counteract the virus is in an item that a girl has brought when she visited L. L only has few days to solve the case, and he has to protect the two children from a certain group aiming to reduce human beings using the virus.

While deaths due to supernatural reasons may be unexplainable by science, some believes that it is existing - here in the Philippines, we have the so-called kulam (witchcraft), which are performed by "witches" who perform black magic that can cause harm to their victims. On the other hand, it is just timely that I watched L's side story since it is so relatable - unfortunately, we're still in the middle of pandemic, and coronavirus is still lingering. 😐

Anyway, while it can be ideal to reduce criminals with the use of Death Note, due process of the law should still be followed - and that's what justice is all about. And no matter how the victim deserves to be murdered, murder is still against the law and morality.

Gonna share here one quote that struck me the most while watching, particularly this is from L's side story:

No matter how gifted you are, you alone cannot change the world. - L Lawliet

I'll be going to watch the 2015 drama version of this, as well as the final movie soon!

The title of this entry is a quote from Maria V. Snyder, an American author. Let me relate that quote to a series + two sequel movies that I have just finished watching.

During these previous days, news about an upcoming drama, Tomodachi Game R4, starring Bi Shounen members and two HiHi Jets members Inoue Mizuki and Igari Soya, has been lifted. Teasers have also been uploaded in the official Johnny and Associates Youtube channel. The series will premiere on July 23, 2022 via TV Asahi and will be broadcasted every Saturday at 11 pm JST.

I was not actually aware, until said drama was announced, that there was already the live action adaptation of the manga aired in 2017, so before watching the upcoming drama (but not in real time, as usual), and also due to curiosity about the story, I decided to watch these.

Title: トモダチゲーム (Tomodachi Game/Friends Game)
Genre: Psychological, Suspense, Drama

This is a 4-episode series, each episode is about 23 minutes. Katagiri Yuichi (Yoshizawa Ryo) is a poor high school student yet he values his friends more than money. One time, due to stolen school funds, he, together with his friends, were forced by a mascot named Manabu to participate in games to pay for the debt, which will eventually test their friendship and their trust with one another. The series features the first game, Kokkuri-san, which is more like Japanese ouija board game.

WHERE TO WATCH: Eien no Aidoru subbed the four episodes of this drama!

Continuation of the "trust" games, Yuichi and his friends (also known as Team C) played sugoroku (a Japanese board game with the same rule as Monopoly) as the second game, but with a twist, since this would involve revealing secrets.

The last game, wherein Team C needs to compete with another team, Team K, in a game of hide and seek. This movie would also reveal everything about who is the real traitor and who is the one behind these games of betrayal.

All I can say is that, the series + movies are just intense, and the plot twist was amazing! Even I was suspecting who among them is the traitor lol.

Kudos to Oryo, his acting, his facial expressions (the gaze and the smirk, oh my...!) had impressed me!

Manabu is cute, but creepy lol.

And this has also caught my attention lol. As mentioned in the earlier part of this entry, Bi Shounen members will appear in the upcoming adaptation of Tomodachi Game. Look at Mikasa Tenji (Yamada Yuki) and Shibe Makoto (Okura Shimon), they resemble Ryuga and Naakun, right?! 😁 What is more mindblowing to me is the fact that Ryuga will be playing the role same as Yuki in the upcoming series! However, Miju will be playing as Shibe and Naakun will be a member of Team K.

But I'm also thinking that Ryuga has more androgynous features than Yuki. And of course, Naakun is way shorter than Shimon huehue.

By the way, just a little spoiler, there's a kiss scene between Oryo and Yuki lol. Since Ukki will be the upcoming series' Yuichi, so if ever this series will follow that scene, so Ukki and Ryuga will... EH?! 🤭

Anyway, as I've also mentioned in my previous review on Zero: Ikkakusenkin Game, the lessons that we can learn from this type of drama is that, trust is actually hard to gain, but easy to break. And real friendship is actually rare, since it also involves accepting your friends' real selves.

Overall, I was satisfied, dokidoki-ed after watching both of these, MuneKimi even reminds me of my high school moment with my long time crush lol. However, maybe also because of my age (I am nearing 30s hahaha), I am not already into cliché high school romance. If I am still in my teenage years or early 20s, I would appreciate more of this genre. Anyway, both Ukisho and Raul are soooo kakkoii! Both have chemistry with their onscreen partners. 😍

With the recent hype for Korean survival-game type of drama "Squid Game", some Japanese drama fans are recommending some Japanese dramas with the same genre, such as Alice in Borderland, among others.

Below are just some of the numerous Japanese "death game" movies that I have just finished watching last weekend!

神さまの言うとおり (As the Gods Will)

Takahata Shun lives an ordinary teenage life until he was forced to participate in some children's games, with death as the penalty for losing.

Now it makes sense as to why some are claiming that Squid Game reminds them of this movie, as both are centered on children's games. First game is "Daruma-san ga Koronda", same game as Squid Game's "Green Light, Red Light". So far, among the movies I've watched last weekend, this is my favorite!

The movie also has the sci-fi elements, since the student participants looked like they were teleported in another dimension where they played the games, aside from the talking and moving children's toys that serve as the game moderator (or rather, the "killers"), and how the losers were eliminated. However, the mastermind of the competition is unknown.

THE QUIZ

This is just a one-episode special drama starring teenage Jesse who played the role of one of the finalists of a quiz show. Prize of 100 million yen will be given to the winner, but those who will give the wrong answer in every question will be killed. It turns out to be also a sci-fi drama, and it is more of battle of "instinct and wits".

バトル・ロワイアル (Battle Royale)

High school students were forced to take part in a "Battle Royale", wherein they were given each a bag with random weapon and some food and water, and were sent in an abandoned island where they would try killing each other until one survives.

バトル・ロワイアル II~鎮魂歌(レクイエム)~
(Battle Royale II: Requiem)

Three years after, one of the survivors of first Battle of Royale has set up a terrorist group. High school students were then given a task to attack the terrorists' island and to kill the leader of said terrorist group.

I actually prefer the first Battle Royale than the sequel. The sequel focuses on the war rather than "who will survive".

I just recently watched Arashi movies, and I love Pikanchi movies the most!

Pikanchi movies were really hilarious!
(Left, from Pikanchi~Life is Hard Dakedo Happy~; right, from Pikanchi Double~Life is Hard Dakara Happy~)
pikanchi1 pikanchi2

*From ending credits of "Kiiroi Namida"
kiiroi namida

Namida no Nagareboshi was its theme song that was performed by Arashi, lead by Aiba Masaki.
(It was also performed during their "AAA+ in Dome" concert in 2007)

I really found Saigo no Yakusoku amazing! Because it has mystery element that I prefer most in series and movies,
I consider it as one of my most favorite SP drama of all times! ^_^

I just want Arashi to have a movie or a TV drama together again!

BIKKURI!!!

riemaynine: (Default)
I had watched some movies (Kakushi Toride no San Akunin ~The Last Princess~ & Tokyo Tower starring Matsumoto Jun, and Marathon
[an SP drama] & Ao no Honoo starring Ninomiya Kazunari) and a stage play (Tensei Kunpu starring Ohno Satoshi) last week in my laptop.

My Short Reactions to what I Watched:

Kakushi Toride no San-Akunin ~The Last Princess~

I somewhat remembered some fantasy movies with it. MatsuJun here is unattractive - having beard.
si jun at si betong! xd
my imouto noticed that the one who played the role of Shinpachi(the one beside Jun looks like Filipino comedian Betong Sumaya...WAHAHA... AMAZING!

Tokyo Tower

I was so shocked with "Tokyo Tower" movie. Because the movie has scenes not suitable for minors (Luckily, I'm already 21 years old.),
it took me more than 2 hours (the duration of the movie is 2 hours and 5 minutes) to finish it due to my imouto who's been curious.
When I saw "love scenes", especially the scene wherein MatsuJun is in a jacuzzi, my initial reaction: BIKKURI!!!
Okada Junichi-senpai is actually the lead actor, but I was shocked with MatsuJun's character even more...hahaha...

Marathon SP

As usual, Nino-kun's acting is very effective, and he did his best to portray the role of an autistic runner. The SP drama is very inspiring.
Another thing: I noticed some brand parodies! ^o^
brand spoof1
Sony Bravia became BONY BRAVOA; Sharp Duos became SHARF ADUOS;
Panasonic became PONACONIC and Hitachi became HATACHI!

Ao No Honoo
I like Nino-kun's dark character in here. As expected, he's really Arashi's best actor! ^-^

Tensei Kunpu
Ohno-kun did his best in his stageplay. I also love the theme of the play(Ohno-kun's character from future going back to the past).
I saw joyuu Minami once again! (I last saw her in The Quiz Show 2 and Yukan Club). I heard Arashi's "Wow!!" and Ohno-kun danced
A.RA.SHI.'s signature dance moves! xDD
